Hobbs and Shaw proved itself to be an enjoyable action movie and a solid addition to the Fast and Furious universe. So, where will the frenemies go from here?
Given the post-credits scenes, we expected that a sequel would happen and in March 2020, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that the sequel was in development.
“We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I’m pretty excited about it,” he said. “[We] just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go.” But what can we expect from the sequel to the Fast & Furious spin-off?
Hobbs and Shaw 2 plot: Who’s the baddie this time?
There was also quite a lot of back story for Hobbs and Shaw left, including how MI6 got its hands on a virus that can wipe out half of the population in the first place.
Though this wasn’t explored in the movie, it could make for an interesting foundation for a sequel, in which Hobbs and Shaw may have to go up against the very governments they work for. This is all speculation, though, as no seeds were explicitly sewn.
Hobbs and Shaw 2 cast: They’ll be back…
Obviously, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham would return to a Hobbs and Shaw sequel. Whether or not he features in Hobbs and Shaw 2, Idris Elba said he would like to see his character return for a separate spin-off origin story. The sequel would likely see Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) return, given her link to both MI6 and the quick but sweet kiss she shared with Hobbs in the third act.
Johnson hinted that the future line up of the Hobbs and Shaw team was featured in the post-credits scenes. The only non-main characters to appear in those were Ryan Reynolds’ agent Lock and Helen Mirren’s Magdalene Shaw. The mystical disembodied voice of the head of Etheon may finally become corporeal, too. Only time will tell.
Hobbs and Shaw 2 release date: When can we expect it?
Let’s be honest, we have no idea. But we can take a guess.
There have been roughly two years between every Fast and Furious movie. The tenth Fast and Furious movie is in the works, but no release date has been given.
Fast and Furious 9 has been delayed to April 2021, so another Hobbs and Shaw movie is probably unlikely to happen in 2021. That means we could have to wait until 2022 for a sequel, but maybe we’ll get double the Fast & Furious goodness next year.
A 2022 release date would also leave room for the tenth and final Fast and Furious movie to come out afterwards, in 2022 (one year after Fast & Furious 9), but we’ll just have to wait and see. There is also a female-centred Fast and Furious spin-off coming, but when remains to be seen.
