Jason Momoa’s FasFast Furious 10 casting Jason Momoa as a villain perfectly reverses Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s original plan to bring the Aquaman star into the franchise.
The continued growth of the Fast & Furious movies continues to allow Universal to convince major Hollywood stars to join Vin Diesel’s improbable action franchise, including names like John Cena, Charlize Theron, and Kurt Russell, among others. Fast & Furious 10 has now cast Jason Momoa, as he’ll play one of the movie’s main villains.
Momoa’s decision to join the popular worldwide franchise is the latest step in his ascension through Hollywood. He received his breakout role in Game of Thrones as Khal Drago, and it wasn’t long after that role ended that he became a superhero.
Zack Snyder made him Aquaman for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, and Momoa’s underwater hero has become a huge hit for the DC Extended Universe. Aquaman made over $1 billion worldwide to declare Momoa as a new box office draw.
His other roles include a recent scene-stealing performance as Duncan Idaho in Dune. Jason Momoa is no stranger to massive franchises, and his Fast & Furious 10 casting isn’t even the first time he’s been linked to the series. Dwayne Johnson originally had a plan for Momoa—one that has now been reversed.
After Dwayne Johnson joined the Fast & Furious franchise with Fast Five, he began making plans for a spinoff series for his character Luke Hobbs. Universal saw the opportunity to capitalize on The Rock’s popularity and greenlit Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Part of the movie takes place in Hobbs’ home country of Samoa, where his family is introduced.
Johnson originally wanted Jason Momoa to play Hobbs’ brother, a role that ultimately went to his real-life cousin and WWE world champion, Roman Reigns. This would’ve made Momoa a heroic character in the Fast & Furious universe who could even make future appearances and take on a bigger role. However, Fast & Furious 10 reverses The Rock’s plan by making Momoa a villain instead.
Jason Momoa’s Fast & Furious 10 casting also alters what characters in the franchise he’ll interact with. The Rock obviously wanted Momoa to play his brother in Hobbs & Shaw so the two actors could share the screen.
However, that won’t happen now that Momoa is going to be in Fast & Furious 10, since Vin Diesel is involved. Johnson refuses to be part of the main franchise movies due to Johnson’s rather public feud with Diesel, and won’t be in Fast & Furious 10 as a result. Not only does that mean The Rock won’t get to work with Momoa, but he’ll have to sit by while Vin Diesel does.
The complete reversal of The Rock’s plan for Momoa’s Fast & Furious future is quite evident, even if it is likely unintentional on some level. Although it wouldn’t make much sense since John Cena just played Dominic Toretto’s secret brother Jakob, it would be incredibly ironic if Momoa’s villain character was related to the Toretto family in some fashion.
It would represent Fast & Furious 10 taking another part of The Rock’s plan and using it in a different way. Regardless, it should be fun to see exactly how Jason Momoa factors into Fast & Furious 10.
